Midway Baptist Church

Old Adam Meeting House once stood as the only place of worship along the River Road and through the Lampkin settlement of Pulaski County. Built before 1800, and for nearly sixty years the only church east of the Ocmulgee south of Hawkinsville, it served as the center of faith and community. The land for the church was donated by James L. Lampkin, whose property encompassed much of the area.

But like many congregations, Adam Meeting House was not immune to disagreements. After years of friction, part of the membership broke away to form a new church of their own. They chose a site halfway between Old Limestone Church on Chicken Road and Daniels Church on the River Road. In 1857 their new meeting house was complete and, appropriately, they named it Midway.

Midway thrived for more than twenty-five years. As more settlers moved east of the river, it became harder for many members to attend services. The congregation began meeting at the Ruhama schoolhouse, three miles east, where Rev. W. R. Steely suggested they build a new sanctuary. By 1893 the plans were set—a 30-by-52-foot church, fifteen feet between joints. A building committee of local men was appointed, and in March 1894 the new church was dedicated as New Midway.

Disaster struck in the spring of 1915, when a cyclone destroyed the building along with several members’ homes. Services were temporarily moved into the Midway schoolhouse until another new structure could be completed. This time, the congregation decided to relocate closer to the school, purchasing land from W. A. Simmons and exchanging the old lot for a site directly in front of the schoolhouse.

The timing was difficult, as the First World War made both materials and labor hard to come by. Still, with persistence and faith, the congregation completed their new sanctuary about three years later, ensuring that the legacy begun with Old Adam Meeting House lived on through Midway and New Midway.
