Upatoi Primitive Baptist

Upatoi Primitive Baptist is located in rural Talbot County between Talbotton and Waverly Hall.  There is not a lot of history available on the old church but we did find this post 0n This Joy’s Ancestry by Joy Fisher dated April 11, 2015.  One of the more interesting elements of the interior are the theatre-type seats purchased from the Warm Springs Foundation in the 1950s.

“The Upatoi Primitive Baptist Church building is located directly across the street from the Olive Branch United Methodist Church.  At some point, the church was moved from Upatoi, Georgia, about a 20-minute drive south of its current location on O’Neal Road, just off Highway 315, outside Talbotton, Georgia. Every board of the church was painstakingly numbered so that it could be put back correctly in its new home.

Since that time, the two churches have always been close. Members of both found themselves at Olive Branch United Methodist Church every second and fourth Sunday and at Sunday school every first Sunday. On the third Sunday, you could find them at Upatoi. It is said visitors could not tell who were Methodist and who were Primitive Baptist!  Upatoi church records dating as far back as the early 1800s exist regarding church meetings. I am unsure at what date the congregation stopped services. At some point, the building was donated to the Olive Branch United Methodist Church to be used as a community outreach center.”
