Omaha Baptist

Omaha Baptist is an architectural jewel located in the picturesque village of Omaha near the Chattahoochee River. The church was founded in 1896 but the roots of Omaha are connected to the Summerhill Baptist church, founded in 1837 first as a Primitive Baptist and later Missionary Baptist

According to the Stewart County history, a large part of the Summerhill congregation withdrew from that church in 1896 for the purpose of establishing one at Omaha.  The Summerhill congregation was subsequently dissolved in 1905 and the building was sold to an African American group who established a school there. The first Omaha church was built in 1896, but in February of 1913,it was destroyed by a cyclone. The present church you see here was built in 1914.  The church is inactive now and there are only a few members left.  However, it is well maintained, along with the grounds around it.

Omaha is a lovely village located close the Chattahoochee River on the Alabama border. It was founded in 1891 when the railroad arrived.  The Georgia General Assembly incorporated Omaha in 1891, but the town’s municipal charter was dissolved in 1995.  Omaha Baptist is an architectural treasure that represents an important part of Georgia history.  She is well worth a visit.  Be sure to click and scroll the photos below for more information about Omaha Baptist.
