Oak Grove

Oak Grove Church in Crisp County is a fascinating site, though little is known about its history. Small congregations like this once dotted Georgia’s rural landscape, serving as central places for communities to gather, worship, celebrate, mourn, and share life in the country. In many cases, churches like Oak Grove also doubled as schoolhouses for African American students before public education was available to them.

Sites like this are vital in helping us understand the full picture of Georgia’s past. And while we may not yet have the complete story of Oak Grove, we believe it is important to preserve its memory in hopes that more information will come to light. If you know anything about this church or the community it served, please share it in the comments below.
