In 1785, shortly after the American Revolution, there were only nine churches in the Georgia backcountry—three Lutheran, two Presbyterian, one Congregationalist, and three Baptist. There were no Methodist congregations, but that would soon change. The “unchurched wilderness” was on the verge of transformation, and Baptists and Methodists would lead the way.
