Notchaway Baptist

Notchaway Baptist Church was established in 1839 along the banks of Notchaway Creek in Baker County, Georgia. That same year, the church is listed among those requesting membership in the Bethel Baptist Association, according to its 1839 minutes. Later historical records from the Bowen Baptist Association note that Notchaway became actively involved in 1863, with early church families including the Mathis, McMurria, Moore, Bodiford, and Jones families. In 1872, Notchaway officially joined the Bowen Baptist Association.

In November 1895, a decision was made to move the original church building from its location on Notchaway Creek to a site known as Old Providence, while a new sanctuary was under construction. That new building was completed the following year, in 1896.

Notchaway is a Missionary Baptist Church, and early church minutes reflect a strong commitment to both domestic and foreign missions, with regular collections taken to support these efforts.

Today, Notchaway Baptist remains an active and vibrant congregation. Services are held every Sunday at 11 a.m., and baptisms are still performed in the nearby Flint River, maintaining a cherished local tradition. The church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2001, a fitting recognition of its long-standing role in the community.

And yes, the old water pump in the foreground of the photo still works.
