Tabernacle Methodist
There is little history on Tabernacle Methodist in the NGA Methodist Archives at the Pitts Library. It is undated, but we think it was probably submitted in the 1950s. The history states that people still living remember the church was moved to its present location from the original location, about one mile from the present one. That change of location took place between 1845 and 1855. Therefore, our conservative estimate is that the church was organized around 1840.
It stayed that way until 1924, when the church was renovated and two Sunday School rooms were added. Later, the church was painted several times and equipped with electricity and gas heating. Apparently, the church struggled in the early part of the 20th century, but enjoyed a renaissance of sorts in the 1950s when new residents moved into this part of Monroe County. The history states that the future outlook for Tabernacle looks good. “She has a right to expect great things in the future.”
The author of that history would be saddened to see Tabernacle today.
